Day 5: Your mood in a song.
I can't define my mood today in one song + it feels like Spring in Springfield today, so I've been listening to my unofficial Spring playlist in my car (with the windows rolled down. It. Is. Wonderful). So, here are a few songs I've been listening to a lot in the past few days:

Rococo - Arcade Fire
I Feel It All - Feist
Bang Bang - Dalida
Another Day - Angus & Julia Stone

Also: I have a request. In my English class, we have to write a research paper defending our definition of art (this paper is so my thing, it's not even funny). I defined art as something that can greatly impact the course of someone's life; art has the ability to define someone as a person. Here is where you come in. If you agree with me, which I think my definition is fairly broad and probably fits most of you that read my blog, tell me in the comments, or email me (ehaleytyson@gmail.com) how you think this is true. Basically, defend my thesis. Give me reasons why you think art can define someone & their future. Be creative! I won't use any names, and I'll most likely end up sharing it on this blog as soon as it is completed, so you wonderful readers can see how you helped! :) Thank you so much!
xoxo Haley

  1. He Haley,
as I really enjoy reading your blog – you seem like such a nice girl – I thought I could at least try to offer my bits:

one way to approach your thesis would be to claim that art defines identity in many different ways.

Like, literature/photo/film/paintings/theater/music are constructing and de-constructing concepts of identity (of oneself or others). Art is changing the way (e.g. a specific) identity is seen. Art is showing us wheter an id-concept is over-construct and therefore artificial.
    You could ask (whomever ):
which discourse regarding identity are currently going on in arts?
How is identity (ethnicity, history!!!, etc) shown and represented in arts? – Sometimes art is abused for showing something (e.g. sth historical) more/less/differently than “necessary”.
Is art more relevant in times of economical/political/social crisis? – I think so. Art helps the artist and the people that “enjoy” it to see more clearly, to see another side of a story or to verify their own, or to just see more. This htough is closely connected to the provocative power of art; sometimes radical new views on certain topics expressed through art can change the way society talks about things – which would be the first step of change. Art is questioning social contexts (and many other things) and has therefore a power that shouldn’t be underestimated. Which would also lead in the opposite direction, to the art the is in a way so traditional that it preserves “old” concepts of society and identity – could be a good thing (think native American culture etc) and a bad. But definitely live-changing, totally.

Hope this helps and sorry for that Im –obviously- not a native speaker.

  2. Skating is a major form of art for me. I feel as though i'm painting the street with my style. It's a serious way to relieve yourself from anger or even stress in general. I'll look back on my skate days when i'm older and remember how life should be; fun, competitive, and peaceful. Take a day and stroll around on a skateboard, I guarantee that you will feel one with the world.

  3. Skating is a major form of art for me. I feel as though i’m painting the streets with my style, carving sculptures into concrete with my trucks, it goes on and on. It’s a serious way to relieve yourself from anger or even stress in general. I’ll look back on my skate days when i’m old, wrinkled, and losing my steeze, and remember how life should be; fun yet serious, competitive yet peaceful, in a whole…enjoyed. There is just something about taking a cruise down a empty street, searching for rocks in pebble city or a sketch rail that might just barely hold your body weight, that makes everything you’ve ever done seem a lot less meaningful. The perfect playlist destroying your eardrums, setting the mood, makes for the absolute best day. I guess what i’m trying to say is skateboarding is life, maybe not to you, but to the few out there…it’s our only hope for sanity. Take a day and stroll around on a skateboard, I guarantee that you will feel one with the world.
